# Does Google or ChatGPT penalize AI content?

## An Ahrefs study of 600,000 pages reveals no penalty, showing that quality and user value are the true ranking factors, not whether the content is AI or human-written.

No. A comprehensive [Ahrefs study of 600,000 pages](https://www.seozilla.ai/ahrefs-study-finds-google-neutral-on-ai-content-rankings) found no evidence that Google penalizes AI-generated content. The research revealed:

- Near-zero correlation between AI content usage and Google rankings
- Over 86% of high-ranking pages contain some level of AI-generated content
- Pages with minimal AI content showed only a weak correlation with higher positions

[In 2022 a Google exec confirmed that they have never said AI content is bad or that there is a penalty for it](https://www.seozilla.ai/no-google-ai-content-penalty-2025-seo-insights).

This means AI content is not inherently penalized. What matters is the quality, relevance, and value of the content — whether it's written by AI or humans. SEOZilla focuses on creating high-quality, optimized content that provides real value to readers.
